Life with Tinnitus
Hearing loss is the third most common medical condition, affecting 48 million Americans, with one in three people over the age of 65 experiencing some degree of hearing loss. Of this population, 80% of people with hearing loss also report some degree of tinnitus.
Tinnitus is commonly known as a “ringing of the ears,” wherein people hear sounds that have no external audio stimulus. These sounds, which range from a whistle to a buzz to a pop to a crack to a roar or a ringing, differs case by case, with some experiences lasting for short periods of time while others are a constant companion. While there is no single cause for tinnitus, it is closely linked to hearing loss. Exposure to loud noises for extended periods of time may lead to noise-induced hearing loss as well as tinnitus; age-related hearing loss (known as presbycusis) has also been linked to tinnitus.
Though there is currently no cure for tinnitus, there are many solutions available. If tinnitus is linked to other physical conditions such as high blood pressure, ear canal blockage, ototoxic medication, treating these conditions may lessen or eradicate the symptoms of tinnitus.
In some cases, tinnitus may be treated by addressing hearing loss, amplifying sounds, suppressing the noises of tinnitus with a mask, and listening to soothing sounds or tones. There are also multi-step programs in place to address the frustrating experience of tinnitus.
Widex Zen Therapy
One such therapy is the Widex Zen Therapy, a program that relieves tinnitus with four parts, which consist of:
- Counseling – to educate and assist the limbic system to alter its negative interpretation of the tinnitus via cognitive and behavior intervention;
- Amplification – to stimulate the ears and brain and to prevent overcompensation;
- Fractal tones – otherwise known as Widex Zen tones, delivered in a discreet and convenient manner, designed to both relax and provide acoustic stimulation;
- 4) Relaxation – highlighted by behavioral exercises and sleep management strategies.
The Widex Zen Therapy program is available as a unique music program in all of Widex’s newer hearing aids, or as a standalone device called Zen2Go, which is fitted with a tinnitus management program. Depending on the wearer’s hearing abilities, we will identify the best option for you. The Widex Zen Therapy program plays random, soothing harmonic tones, which they refer to as “a spa for your ears.”
For people who suffer from tinnitus, the Widex Zen Therapy offers relief from this stressful condition.
